After an unprovoked and devastating alien invasion of Earth leaves the planet in tatters the remaining humans must learn to work together and fight the aliens if they are to continue to exist, Former history professor Tom Mason as Second In Command of the 2nd Mass must juggle his duties as leader with his duties as a father to his 3 sons, One of whom is being held captive by the aliens.

While scouting for supplies, Tom, Hal and their squad encounter a gang of marauders determined to get their hands on the 2nd Massachusetts’ weapons. Leading the gang is an ex-con named John Pope, who decides to use his hostages as bargaining material.

Dr. Michael Harris joins the 2nd Mass with a theory about what might save the teenagers abducted by the aliens. But the plan could be derailed when Tom starts digging for answers to questions that have haunted him since the early days of the invasion. The 2nd Mass comes face-to-face with skitters and mechs when they attempt to rescue Ben.

Tom and Hal lead a team to find more motorcycles for the 2nd Mass after Pope provides details on where they can be found but they must deal with Skitters and Harnessed Teenagers once they arrive. Back at the high school where they've set up base Dr. Harris and Anne disagree over the best tactic to gather more intelligence on the aliens.

Hal comes up with a risky and dangerous plan to infiltrate a skitter's lair and rescue Ben and other harnessed kids that are being held captive.

Lt. Terry Clayton of the 7th Mass arrives at the high school with disturbing news that Skitters and Mechs are on their way to attack the 2nd Mass in retaliation for their breakout of the children. Clayton has a plan to lead the children to safety while the adults remain to fend off the attack, but his plan is met with strong resistance by all the parents, including Tom.

Hal begins to suspect the farm is not the idyllic safe haven Clayton said it was, and when Mike stumbles upon the horrifying truth, he and Hal find themselves up against an unforeseen enemy.

Captain Weaver's mental condition continues to deteriorate causing trouble for Tom and Hal when he joins them on a reconnaissance mission. Back at the high school Pope constructs a potent weapon to use against the aliens, and Anne makes a shocking discovery while performing an autopsy on a dead Skitter.

As the assault on the alien base draws closer, tension builds. Tom struggles to come to terms with Annie's new discovery.

Tom stays behind to protect the camp and its occupants, while the rest of the resistance launch an attack on the alien base. Information regarding the aliens motives comes to light.
